Title National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and Protecting Children and Adults from Exposure in California
Introduction LA Testing provides laboratory services, sampling supplies, test kits and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate lead hazards in homes, schools and work environments.

Huntington Beach, CA, October 24, 2023

This year, National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) takes place from October 22nd through the 28th. The week of recognition was created through a partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). NLPPW highlights the many ways parents, caregivers and communities can reduce children's exposure to lead and prevent its harmful health effects.

According to the EPA:

Lead is particularly dangerous to children because their growing bodies absorb more lead than adults do and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to the damaging effects of lead. Babies and young children can also be more highly exposed to lead because they often put their hands and other objects that can have lead from dust or soil on them into their mouths. Children may also be exposed to lead by eating and drinking food or water containing lead or from dishes or glasses that contain lead, inhaling lead dust from lead-based paint or lead-contaminated soil or from playing with toys with lead-based paint.

“Millions of households across the United States, including many right here in California, have young children living in them with lead exposure hazards,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Even relatively low levels of lead can impair a child’s cognitive development and cause a host of health issues. Fortunately, lead poisoning is entirely preventable if action is taken to eliminate exposure risks.”

LA Testing supports the efforts of NLPPW and offers environmental, material and industrial hygiene testing for lead and other hazardous materials from air, water, paint, dust, soil and other samples. They also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate exposure risks to lead and other hazardous substances.
