Title California Company Issues Food Allergy Alert and Product Recall
Introduction LA Testing provides food allergen testing and labeling services to protect consumers and to help companies comply with food safety regulations to avoid costly product recalls.

Huntington Beach, California, February 25, 2025

Last month, a food import and distribution company in Los Angeles County issued an allergy alert and announced the recall of a corn puff snack manufactured in Japan because it contains undeclared milk. The product was distributed to over 30 states through retail stores, restaurants, and online businesses.

According to the recall notice:

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume those products.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to food and include milk, eggs, wheat, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and soybeans. Sesame became the ninth major food allergen to require special labeling through the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act, a federal law passed in 2021 that went into effect in 2023.

“Different countries have their own rules when it comes to food allergen labeling requirements, so importers and distributors need to be aware of the challenges they may face when selling products from overseas into the U.S. market,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Fortunately, the food scientists at LA Testing are here to help companies comply with FALCPA and FASTER requirements. Our California laboratories offer a wide range of food testing and labeling services. These include testing for allergens, as well as microbial and chemical contaminants. We also provide food labeling services, shelf life studies, and so much more. These services can be essential for protecting the public and preventing costly product recalls.”
