Huntington Beach, CA, October 11, 2023
Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced settlements with three companies in California over claims of violations of federal law that protect the public from lead-based paint (LBP). The settlements address renovation, repair and painting work performed by the companies at residential and commercial properties in the greater Los Angeles area.
EPA claims the firms violated numerous provisions of the agency’s LBP Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule. Two of the three cases against the companies were initiated by tips and/or complaints submitted by the public to EPA. As part of the settlements, each of the firms agreed to pay thousands in civil penalties.
A renovation, repair or painting project in a pre-1978 home or building can easily create dangerous lead dust. Renovation companies that deal with lead-based paint activities have to comply with the RRP Rule. This federal law requires that a general contractor or subcontractor have at least one person assigned to a project who has been properly trained in the management of lead-based paint so that they can properly train others and ensure that paint is properly managed or disposed of.
“Fortunately, identifying lead hazards in homes and buildings is quick, convenient and affordable,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “LA Testing, with laboratories across California, provides environmental, industrial hygiene and material testing services for lead, asbestos and other regulated substances. We also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits and personal protective equipment. These resources protect workers and the public. They also help companies comply with federal, state and local health and safety regulations.”
