Huntington Beach, California, March 30, 2023
Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it had finalized settlements with two California firms related to allegations that each violated federal laws that protect the public from lead-based paint hazards. The settlements, one with a construction firm and the other with a remodeling company, relate to renovation, repair and painting work at residential properties in Northern California.
According to the announcement:
In both cases, EPA claims that the firms violated numerous provisions of EPA’s Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, which requires workers to be certified and trained in the use of lead-safe work practices, and requires renovation, repair, and painting firms to be EPA-certified. The companies failed to obtain the required EPA certification before starting renovation work, failed to assign a certified renovator to supervise the jobs and failed to keep various records of the work that was performed.
“The Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule was created to protect the public from lead-based paint hazards that can occur during repair or remodeling in homes and child-occupied facilities, such as schools, that were built before 1978,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In these two cases, each company paid a substantial penalty. Fortunately, identifying lead hazards in homes and buildings is quick, convenient and affordable. LA Testing, with laboratories across California, provides environmental, industrial hygiene and material testing services for lead and other regulated materials. We also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits and personal protective equipment. These resources protect workers, the public, and help to keep companies in regulatory compliance.”
