Particle size is routinely used to determine HVAC efficiency. Filters in the venting system are continually bombarded by particles that can damage the filter or clog the pores causing pressure to tear or unseat the filter releasing particles into the air stream. Improper installation and manufacturer defects are also among the reasons that particles may not be captured.
Samples collected with 0.1m Polycarbonate filters at the registers and the intake using 10 lpm for a total volume of 1,500+ liters are analyzed. The results are reported in particle size vs. concentration. This information can help to determine if the filter is collecting the appropriate size particles or if there is damage within the system.
