Huntington Beach, CA, August 19th, 2020
This summer, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that by 2045, every new truck sold in California will be zero-emission. This “first-in-the-world” rule requires truck manufacturers to begin transitioning from diesel trucks and vans to electric zero-emission trucks in 2024.
According to the CARB announcement, the regulation zeroes in on air pollution in the state’s most disadvantaged and polluted communities. It also stated that trucks are the largest single source of air pollution from vehicles, responsible for 70% of the smog-causing pollution and 80% of carcinogenic diesel soot even though they number only 2 million among the 30 million registered vehicles in California.
“People living in communities with heavy diesel traffic and workers in industries that utilize diesel vehicles and equipment are often at risk of exposure to elevated levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and exhaust gases,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “DPM includes soot particles made up primarily of carbon, ash, metallic abrasion particles, sulfates and silicates. Diesel soot particles have a solid core consisting of elemental carbon, with other substances attached to the surface, including organic carbon compounds known as aromatic hydrocarbons. Exposure over time, can increase one’s risk of cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary and respiratory diseases, in addition to lung cancer."
Diesel engine exhaust was added to California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s (OEHHA) list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity for purposes of Proposition 65 back in 1990. LA Testing’s California laboratories offer air testing services, sampling supplies and particulate monitoring instruments to identify these and many other airborne hazards. They have even sponsored an educational video about diesel exhaust, particulate matter and air quality issues that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/mAjDvBwKFWE.
