Title Hazardous Chemicals, Safety Data Sheets and Minimizing Exposure Risks in California
Introduction LA Testing provides industrial hygiene and environmental testing services to identify chemical hazards in all types of occupational, institutional and residential settings.

Huntington Beach, CA, March 24th, 2020

The California Department of Industrial Relations states that every day at workplaces throughout the state, employees work with or are incidentally exposed to hazardous substances that can harm their health or cause safety hazards. In fact, millions of residents work in occupations that involve the production, use, sale or transportation of potentially hazardous chemicals.

The hazards associated with coming into contact with these chemicals are wide-ranging and are based on a number of factors. These include the type and dose of chemical, duration of exposure and the individual. To help communicate information about the hazards of chemical products, the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)) was revised in 2012 to require that chemical manufacturers, distributors or importers provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) (formerly MSDSs or Material Safety Data Sheets).

“Employers in California and across the nation must ensure that Safety Data Sheets are readily accessible to employees for all hazardous chemicals in the workplace,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “This may be done in multiple ways, for example, employers may keep the SDSs in a binder or on computers as long as employees have immediate access to the information. These Safety Data Sheets do provide valuable information if they are kept up to date and actually represent the chemicals in the workplace, but they may not always accurately represent what workers are truly being exposed through inhalation, ingestion or skin absorption.”

With multiple laboratories in California, LA Testing offers chemical and microbial testing services, sampling supplies, air monitoring instruments and a full line of personal protective equipment (PPE). They have even sponsored an educational video about Safety Data Sheets that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/hRmOgJVNCA0.
