Title San Diego Area School Takes Steps After Water Tests Show Lead Above the District’s Action Level
Introduction LA Testing provides analytical services, sampling supplies and test kits to identify lead hazards from water, air, bulk, dust and surface samples.

Huntington Beach, CA, April 9th, 2019

The principal of an elementary school in the Serra Mesa community of San Diego recently sent a letter home to parents of students concerned about lead levels found in some water outlets at the school. The letter shared the following, “As part of San Diego Unified’s commitment to provide safe and quality schools in all neighborhoods, the district has been sampling drinking water for elevated levels of lead. In July 2017, the Board of Education adopted a drinking water remediation plan that reduced the district’s lead action level to 5 parts per billion (ppb) from 15 ppb. This new action level is the lowest among California school districts and matches the Food and Drug Administration’s standard for bottled drinking water.”

The document goes on to state that test results have indicated that four drinking water fountains and one faucet tested above the 5 ppb action level. In response, school administrators have secured these water outlets until they can be remedied and retested. This is good news as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that no safe blood lead level in children has been identified and that even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to affect IQ, ability to pay attention and academic achievement.

“Elevated lead levels from water outlets have been found in a number of schools across California in recent years,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “This lead doesn’t typically come from natural drinking water sources. It usually is a result of leaching that occurs when water passes through older plumbing fixtures, pipes or solder that contains lead. These same lead issues can also be found in some homes and commercial buildings throughout California.”

Environmental specialists at LA Testing help concerned parents and residents test for lead from water, air, dust, surface and soil samples. They provide comprehensive lead testing services, all of the sampling supplies necessary and offer an easy-to-use Drinking Water Test Kit. LA Testing has even sponsored an educational video about lead in drinking water that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/2kvtAcpw1MY.
