Earlier this summer, CBSLA broadcast a story about more than a dozen people from an apartment complex in West Los Angeles having to temporarily leave their homes. According to the report, the manager of the complex had been removing popcorn ceilings and put the debris in a dumpster without the proper safety precautions. This allowed dusts that could contain asbestos to cause contamination and potentially endanger residents.
Popcorn ceilings are quite common in many properties built between the 1960s and 1980s. During those decades, popcorn ceiling were the standard method of ceiling texturing, but people’s tastes have changed and today popcorn ceilings give an apartment or house a dated look to many. This is why removing a popcorn ceiling is such popular DIY project.
“Unfortunately, asbestos was used in countless popcorn ceilings found in California and across the country,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “The only way to know for sure if a popcorn ceiling or other material has asbestos is to have it tested. In some instances, health and safety regulations require it. If test results indicate asbestos is present, then properly trained asbestos removal professionals can safely handle the situation so that no workers, building occupants or family members are at risk of exposure. Failure to take this step could result in exposing people to this known carcinogen and could have legal ramifications that include costly fines and lawsuits.”
In California, LA Testing has multiple laboratories available to help companies, institutions and residents determine if asbestos is present in material or environmental samples. Their laboratory experts provide analytical services, sample collection supplies and even easy-to-use test kits. In addition to asbestos analyses, LA Testing also provides a comprehensive range of laboratory services for other commonly encountered indoor hazards, including radon, lead and mold.
