Title Possible Undeclared Peanuts Results in Fullerton Bakery Issuing a Product Recall
Introduction LA Testing provides food testing services to help companies comply with labeling regulations and to protect people with food allergies from consuming them.

In late April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a product recall initiated by a bakery in Fullerton, California. The company is recalling cookies that were distributed to convenience stores across Southern California because they may contain undeclared peanuts.

Because so many people have food allergies, strict avoidance of food allergens and early recognition and management of allergic reactions to food are important measures to prevent serious health consequences.

In an effort to help consumers avoid the health risks posed by food allergens, Congress passed the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA). The law applies to all foods whose labeling is regulated by FDA, both domestic and imported. It requires that labels must clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens, which FALCPA defines as Major Food Allergens.
