South Pasadena, CA, January 21st
In December, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a product recall initiated by a Los Angeles food manufacturer. The smelt roe products in question may contain undeclared wheat or soy which could put people with allergies to these ingredients at risk.
According to the FDA, “Each year, millions of Americans have allergic reactions to food. Although most food allergies cause relatively mild and minor symptoms, some food allergies can cause severe reactions, and may even be life-threatening. There is no cure for food allergies. Strict avoidance of food allergens and early recognition and management of allergic reactions to food are important measures to prevent serious health consequences.”
Common allergy symptoms to wheat or soy may include the following:
- Hives or rash
- Nausea, cramps, vomiting and diarrhea
- Sneezing, wheezing or asthma
- Nasal irritation
“In extreme cases, anaphylaxis can occur when people with food allergies unknowingly consume foods that contain them,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Some of the most common food allergens include milk, egg, soy, wheat, peanut, tree nut, fish and shellfish. Food labeling requirements call for these common allergens to be printed on food packaging when products contain these ingredients.”
