A home or building’s heating and cooling system acts as the lungs of the property as it works to take air in and exhaust air out of the structure. Through normal daily indoor activities, people generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants that can have a negative impact on the system’s ductwork. In fact, according to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living in a typical six-room home.
This dust may contain dander, pollen, mold and various chemicals. In some older properties, this dust could even contain lead and asbestos if these materials are present in the building and have become airborne at some point.
These contaminants are often pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated many times each day. Although some of these pollutants are caught by the HVAC system’s air filter, over time this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work. While dirty ducts don’t necessarily mean unhealthy air in a home, school or workplace, they are often an indication of possible air quality issues.
“Contaminants in dirty ducts could cause problems for people with allergies, respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD, and even autoimmune disorders,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “People who suspect they may have dirty air coming from their ductwork should consider having the air tested. If test results indicate a problem, having the ductwork examined and cleaned by a qualified professional could be just what is needed to help ensure that building occupants are being exposed to good indoor air quality.”
LA Testing offers a complete array of testing services, sampling supplies and air monitoring equipment to help identify air quality problems. They also provide easy-to-use test kits to identify a wide range of indoor contaminants. LA Testing has even sponsored an educational video about dirty ducts and indoor air quality that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/7_En7i78PG0.
