Garden Grove, CA, May 14th, 2015
In 2013, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) released the report, Asthma in California – A Surveillance Report. In it, they state that asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases and that 3 million residents of California had asthma when the report was published.
The CDPH report states, “Over one in five with current asthma are considered to have very poorly controlled asthma. Asthma results in an estimated 11.8 million days of work/usual activities missed per year among adults and 1.2 days of school/day care missed per year among children. Surveillance data show that there is much room for improvement in routine health care for people with asthma.”
In addition to receiving good medical care, one of the primary things people with asthma can do to help manage their condition is to avoid known asthma triggers. Asthma triggers can vary from person to person, but often include exposure to mold, dust mites, cockroaches, pet and rodent dander, smoke, volatile organic compounds and other substances.
“In the CDPH report, it shows that over $1 billion was spent in 2010 on just hospitalization costs for asthma treatment,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “Not only can the lives of asthmatics be greatly enhanced by controlling asthma attacks through the avoidance of asthma triggers, this can also save a tremendous amount of money for the state of California and residents who suffer from the condition.”
LA Testing offers analytical services and sampling supplies to identify asthma triggers and respiratory irritants that are frequently found in people’s homes, schools and places of business. Understanding what is in the air can help people mitigate asthma trigger sources and avoid exposure.
