Garden Grove, CA, October 15th, 2014
Earlier this month, the Orange County Register published an article about asbestos concerns at the Ocean View School District. According to the article, teachers and parents asked the school district to look into asbestos exposure risks after asbestos was discovered during summer construction projects.
The Ocean View School District began testing all rooms in 11 schools throughout the area. Two elementary schools, Oak View and Hope View, were reported to have been temporarily closed in order to ensure that residual asbestos fibers were not present after asbestos was removed from the ceiling tiles.
In the past, asbestos was added to a number of common building materials to increase strength and durability. It also provided some insulating and fireproofing properties. As the materials age, they can become friable and create a risk for people in the vicinity. They can also become airborne if they are not identified and handled properly during demolition, reconstruction and remodeling activities.
Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Some of these conditions may take years or even decades to appear after exposure. “You cannot tell just by the general appearance of a material if it contains asbestos,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “Fortunately, there are quick and affordable testing solutions offered by LA Testing to determine if asbestos is present in building materials and from air and dust samples. This information not only protects building occupants and workers from asbestos exposure risks, it can also prevent costly fines for not handling asbestos containing materials according to regulations.”
In addition to asbestos testing services and supplies, LA Testing recently sponsored an educational video about malignant mesothelioma and asbestos that can be seen at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEyopPp9Ck4.
