Earlier this summer, a fruit packing company from Cutler, California expanded a voluntary recall of whole white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, plums and pluots due to the potential of the products being contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. That announcement was followed last month by the recall of over 90,000 pounds of fully cooked chicken Caesar salad kit products also due to concerns about possible contamination from Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive bacterium that has been found in at least 37 mammalian species, both domestic and feral, as well as at least 17 species of birds and possibly some species of fish and shellfish. It has have been isolated from soil, silage and other environmental sources. The microorganism is quite hardy and resists the effects of freezing, drying and heat remarkably well.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that about 1,600 people in the U.S. get sick from Listeria each year and that it is the 3rd leading cause of death from food poisoning.
Helping farmers, food manufacturers, retailers, regulators and the general public test for Listeria and other food pathogens is LA Testing and its network of laboratories. “Listeria’s ability to grow at temperatures as low as 3°C permits multiplication even in refrigerated foods,” said Joy Dell’Aringa, M.S., RM (NRM), CFSP, National Food Director at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Its presence has been associated with everything from milk and cheese to fruits, vegetables and meats. LA Testing’s network of laboratories provides rapid testing to identify Listeria and a wide range of other foodborne pathogens. These services can help to prevent infections through proactive testing and to identify the source of an outbreak if one has already occurred.”
LA Testing has sponsored a video about Listeria that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/iXQOwCfZQek .
