Last month, TMZ reported that Sean Stewart is fighting his landlord over back rent after moving out of his home, which he claims had a serious mold problem. According to the article, Mr. Stewart claims that he has been feeling weak and developed blisters because of mold issues that were not properly addressed.
The presence of high levels of mold can cause a myriad of health problems for building occupants. Allergic reactions to mold are common and can be immediate or delayed. Allergic responses may include symptoms such as headache, sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rashes. Mold can also trigger asthma attacks in people who are allergic to mold. In addition, mold can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs of individuals whether or not they are allergic to it.
Some types of mold are also known to cause infections in people with a weakened immune system. Some of these infections can be fatal if not properly treated. Mycotoxins are yet another health concern as some types of mold produce toxic byproducts, which are known to cause a variety of health effects.
“All mold needs to grow is moisture and a food source and unfortunately many building materials and household belongings make for an ideal material to support its growth,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “Whatever is allowing the moisture to enter a property needs to be addressed or the mold will simply continue to grow and can cause health concerns, lower property values and even result in litigation as TMZ reports is the case with Mr. Stewart.”
