Former Merced High School Students Confront Men Who Exposed them to Asbestos
LA Testing offers asbestos testing services to quickly identify its presence in all types of building materials to prevent human exposure.
Garden Grove, CA, January 8th, 2014
Last month, The Sacramento Bee published a report about the latest developments in the sentencing and restitution hearing for three men who pleaded guilty to violating asbestos laws. The three men were involved with an organization that was contracted by the Merced County Office of Education to provide job training for high school students.
Numerous students were used to remove asbestos containing materials from a building that was undergoing renovations. According to the article, some of the people working on the jobsite said the activities caused a fog-like cloud inside the building. Others reported having white hair from all the dust.
Many buildings and homes constructed up until the 1970s used materials that contained asbestos. Due to its strength, durability and insulating fire resistant properties it was a popular material in a wide range of building components. According to the EPA, “Today, asbestos is most commonly found in older homes, in pipe and furnace insulation materials, asbestos shingles, millboard, textured paints and other coating materials, and floor tiles. Elevated concentrations of airborne asbestos can occur after asbestos-containing materials are disturbed by cutting, sanding or other remodeling activities. Improper attempts to remove these materials can release asbestos fibers into the air in homes, increasing asbestos levels and endangering people living in those homes.”
The news report states that up to 68 people may have been exposed to the asbestos fibers at the worksite. “Medical monitoring and possible treatment for those young people exposed to asbestos could cost millions of dollars over the coming decades,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility, California’s leading asbestos testing laboratory. “There are asbestos laws in place that require that these types of building materials be handled by properly trained and equipped professionals. Testing for asbestos is a quick and inexpensive way to ensure that people are not being exposed and that all rules and regulations are being followed.”
