Garden Grove, CA, October 9th, 2013
Last month, The Sacramento Bee published a report about how mold can be an indoor health concern for building occupants. “Mold does more than look bad. It’s smelly and dangerous to your health,” states the article. It also reports that water and mold damage costs insurers approximately $2.5 billion each year.
Mold does not need a lot of water to grow so even a small leak or a minor flooding event can allow it to begin growing indoors. In fact, under the right conditions, mold can begin to grow in as short as 24 to 48 hours when there is sufficient moisture on many building materials and furnishings. Controlling moisture indoors is a key step to preventing mold from becoming a problem.
“Elevated levels of mold indoors can cause allergies, trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals and even lead to infections in some people,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility, a leading mold and indoor air quality testing laboratory in California. “Some types of mold are even known to produce toxins that are known as mycotoxins.”
People are encouraged to look for any damp areas in their home. These could be caused by a leaky roof or window, faulty plumbing, condensation issues, moisture wicking through walls and concrete floors, and any number of other reasons.
For those who suspect they may have a mold problem, or have noticed they have respiratory issues or other health problems when they are indoors, they should consider having the IAQ tested. LA Testing offers testing services to identify all types of indoor contaminants, from mold and bacteria to allergens and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). LA Testing has also sponsored a video about what mold needs to grow indoors that can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr6_zVT-SP0
