California Residents Reminded that Damp Buildings can Result in Respiratory Illnesses
Garden Grove, CA, August 7th, 2013
Although California is a leader in energy efficient and green buildings, it is also home to many older residences, offices and schools that may suffer from damp conditions. Over the past several years, there has been growing interest in the health effects of living, attending school, or working in damp buildings.
Recently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published an alert about preventing occupational respiratory disease from exposure caused by dampness in office buildings, schools and other nonindustrial buildings. The document provides insight into the associated health effects associated with damp buildings and how they can be averted by making dampness prevention a goal during the design, construction, and commissioning phases of a building.
Almost any type of building may develop moisture and dampness problems from roof, window and plumbing leaks, high indoor humidity, flooding events and numerous other causes. One company that has been helping California residents test for problems associated with damp buildings is LA Testing.
“Buildings that suffer from dampness issues may see the growth of mold and bacteria, the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and even the breakdown of building materials,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “There are thousands of species of mold and many are commonly associated with dampness in indoor environments. Many different types of mold can adapt to various moisture conditions and begin to grow indoors when conditions are right.
Exposure to elevated levels of mold, bacteria and VOCs can all result in respiratory concerns. LA Testing provides analytical services to identify these contaminates in indoor environments.”
