Garden Grove, CA, May 8th, 2013
Last month, The Sacramento Bee published a report about possible asbestos exposure of county workers. According to the article, “A Sacramento County safety inspector alleges county workers may have suffered asbestos exposure last year after managers did not take proper steps when cleaning up fallen ceiling material.”
It all started last August when materials from a ceiling fell at Sacramento’s County’s old administrative building. The article states that county managers who oversaw the cleanup claim that asbestos from the incident never became airborne.
The article brings to light the fact that asbestos is still found in many older buildings across California. Asbestos was used in numerous building materials in the past and over time it can become friable and airborne or be disturbed due to remolding and construction activities.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection agency (EPA), “Exposure to asbestos increases your risk of developing lung disease. That risk is made worse by smoking. In general, the greater the exposure to asbestos, the greater the chance of developing harmful health effects.”
One California company that has been at the forefront of helping to identify asbestos is LA Testing. “Asbestos is still with us decades after its use was banned in most building materials,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility. “LA Testing offers convenient and affordable testing services to the general public, contractors, consultants and regulators to quickly determine the presence of asbestos in all types of building materials and environmental samples.”
LA Testing has sponsored an online video about asbestos dangers in the home that can be seen at:
