Title Surgeon General Urges Americans to Learn More about the Dangers of Asbestos Exposure
Introduction LA Testing offers asbestos testing services to quickly identify its presence in all types of building materials.

Garden Grove, CA, April 12th, 2013

The first week of April is National Asbestos Awareness Week.  Exposure to airborne friable asbestos may result in a number of health risks, including serious lung diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma.

Many homes and buildings constructed up until the 1970s used materials that contained asbestos.  Due to the material’s strength, durability, and insulating fire resistant properties it was a popular choice and was installed in many homes and buildings.  Over time, these materials can become damaged and begin to degrade.  When this occurs, cancer causing asbestos fibers may be released into the air.

In recognition of National Asbestos Awareness Week, Dr. Regina Benjamin, the U.S. Surgeon General, urged Americans to learn about the dangers of asbestos exposure in a news release.  In it, she wrote, “Anyone who disturbs asbestos is at risk.  However, it is of special concern for construction, insulation, and demolition workers, pipefitters, boilermakers and others who might disturb asbestos found in old buildings or equipment as part of their work.  The hazard is also very real to home handymen, first-responders, and community volunteers.”

“So many older properties across California may contain building materials that include asbestos,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility, a leading asbestos testing laboratory in the greater Los Angeles area.   “People really need to be aware of possible asbestos hazards.  This is especially true for homeowners who are taking on the task of DIY projects that may disturb these materials.  LA Testing offers quick and affordable testing services to determine the presence of asbestos in all types of building materials.”

LA Testing has sponsored an online video about asbestos dangers in the home that can be seen at:
