Title San Diego Housing Commission Works to Reduce Lead Poisoning
Introduction LA Testing provides lead testing services to help prevent needless exposure to lead and other hazardous heavy metals.

Garden Grove, CA, March 14th, 2013

Last month, the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) offered young children free blood tests for lead poisoning at King-Chavez Primary Academy.  The tests were an ongoing part of the SDHC’s Home Safe Home Program.  The Home Safe Home Program works to protect low-income children and families in the City of San Diego from lead-based paint and other home health hazards.

Lead is a highly toxic metal that was used for many years in paints and other products found in and around homes.  In 1987, lead was added to California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known as Proposition 65.  Prop 65 lists chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm to the state of California.

Lead-based paints were banned for use in housing in the late 1970s.  Unfortunately, there are still countless homes and buildings that were built before the ban that still contain lead-based paints.  Lead-based paint and lead contaminated dusts are the main sources of exposure for lead in children in the United States.

One of the leading providers of lead testing services in California is LA Testing.  LA Testing has a network of laboratories that offer testing supplies, analysis and even field test kits for lead.

“Lead is dangerous to all people, but especially to children,” reported Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Garden Grove facility.  “Babies and young children often put their hands and other objects that can have lead dust on them in their mouths.  It’s important that they spend their time in indoor environments that safe from exposure to lead paints and dusts.”

LA Testing and their affiliate, EMSL Analytical, Inc., have sponsored an educational video about lead hazards in the home.  It can be seen at:
