Californiais cracking down on sixteen companies accused of making, selling, and distributing jewelry containing dangerously high levels of lead despite prior warnings.
Department of Toxic Substances Control has been conducting spot checks for the past three years, scanning all jewelry with an X-ray device to check their lead levels. Pieces of jewelry with high levels of lead were sent to a laboratory for more detailed analysis.
Some of the jewelry items found had lead levels of 1,000 times the legal limit.
There have been no reported cases of illness due to exposure to the contaminated jewelry. However, concerns about these toxic metals are growing, because young children are likely to place jewelry in their mouths, increasing their exposure to the toxic substance.
Ingesting lead can potentially cause health problems in infants and young children such as brain damage, reduced IQ, and learning and behavioral deficiencies.
“In California, LA Testing provides lead testing services in consumer products, food, soil, water, and air samples at its Garden Grove and South Pasadena locations,” reported Shannon Kauffman, Metals Laboratory Supervisor. “We help companies and individuals ensure lead levels are within permissible limits through advanced metal analysis.”
