Workers Memorial Day is observed each year in California and across the nation on April 28. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration describes the day as an opportunity to honor workers who have died on the job, recognize the lasting impact on families and communities, and renew the commitment to protecting the health and safety of all workers.

Safeguarding workers remains an ongoing challenge. Each year, thousands of people in the United States lose their lives due to workplace incidents, while millions more suffer injuries or occupational illnesses. In California alone, 419 fatal occupational injuries were reported in 2024, a decrease from 439 in 2023. Of the 2024 fatalities, 83 were attributed to exposure to harmful substances or environments, down from 106 the previous year.
