Huntington Beach, California, December 1, 2025
Millions of students and hundreds of thousands of teachers attend California’s public and private schools each year. To help schools create healthier learning environments, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated guidance in 2024 outlining everyday practices that can reduce the spread of infections in K–12 classrooms.
The CDC highlights five key action items schools can adopt:
- Improving indoor air quality
- Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting regularly
- Promoting proper handwashing
- Encouraging good respiratory etiquette
- Staying current with recommended vaccinations
Cleaner air, in particular, can help lower the transmission of respiratory illnesses. The CDC recommends steps such as:
- Ensuring HVAC systems are delivering outdoor air as designed
- Incorporating ventilation upgrades during renovations or new construction
- Opening windows when safe to increase airflow
- Using portable air cleaners in spaces with limited ventilation
In addition, daily cleaning and sanitizing of high-touch surfaces, such as desks, doorknobs, keyboards, faucet handles, phones, and toys, remains an important safeguard.
“So much can be done to reduce the spread of infections in classrooms,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “To support California schools, LA Testing provides indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing services for bacteria, viruses, mold, chemicals, asbestos, lead, and other potential hazards. We also offer sampling supplies, user-friendly test kits, air monitoring equipment, and building inspection tools.”
To further promote awareness, LA Testing has sponsored an educational video highlighting the CDC’s infection control recommendations for schools. It is available at: https://youtu.be/chhbvzt4WjM
