Title Improving the Indoor Environment by Identifying Pet Allergens in California Homes & Buildings
Introduction LA Testing offers comprehensive indoor environmental quality services, providing testing, sampling supplies, kits, and air monitoring tools to identify and help reduce exposure to allergens, respiratory irritants, and asthma triggers.

Huntington Beach, California, November 13, 2025

More than half of California households (about 57%) own a pet. While pets bring joy and companionship, they can also contribute to indoor environmental quality (IEQ) challenges caused by odors and allergens.

Pet-related allergies are common, with both furry and feathered animals capable of triggering reactions. A major culprit is pet dander, tiny flecks of skin carrying proteins that can cause allergic responses. These allergens spread through direct contact with pets, contaminated surfaces, or airborne particles, and for some people, they can even trigger asthma attacks.

Cat allergies are estimated to be twice as common as dog allergies. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), cat allergens are found in saliva, skin glands, dander, and even urine, while dog allergens are present in dander, saliva, urine, and blood.

“The NIEHS highlights that pet allergens are especially persistent because they circulate in the air and can remain on carpets and furniture for months,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “They can even be carried on clothing into pet-free environments. Nationwide studies show that dog and cat allergens are present in nearly all U.S. homes, even those without pets.”

To help property owners, building managers, and residents address these concerns, LA Testing provides comprehensive indoor environmental quality solutions. Services include laboratory testing, sampling supplies, user-friendly test kits, and air monitoring instruments designed to detect a wide range of allergens, respiratory irritants, and asthma triggers. When elevated levels are found, steps can be taken to reduce or eliminate exposure.

LA Testing has also released an educational video on pet allergens, available here: https://youtu.be/9pFX8IYAET4
