Huntington Beach, California, March 21, 2025
Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the agency, along with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and public health officials in several states, were investigating a multistate outbreak of Listeria infections linked to supplemental shakes.
The CDC also reported that a foodservice company based in California that handled distribution of two brands of frozen supplemental shakes manufactured by another firm has announced a recall due to the potential for the products to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Many people in this outbreak lived in long-term care facilities or were hospitalized before becoming sick. At the time of the CDC’s Food Safety Alert, the agency reported there were 38 known cases, 37 hospitalizations, and tragically, 12 deaths. The cases have occurred in at least 21 states.
According to information published by the FDA about the shake recall:
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
“In this case, the distributor reports the recalled products primarily went to long-term care facilities and were not available for retail sale,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Unfortunately, many residents of long-term care facilities are more likely to have severe Listeria infections. To help prevent these types of scenarios, the food scientists at LA Testing are dedicated to assisting food growers, manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, and public health officials in their efforts to prevent contaminated foods from reaching the public. With multiple laboratories in California, we offer testing services to identify a wide range of microbial pathogens and chemical contaminants from raw ingredients, production surfaces, and finished products.”
