Huntington Beach, California, February 6, 2025
According to the California Cancer Registry (CCR), more than 175,000 state residents will be diagnosed with some form of cancer this year. To help raise awareness of ways to lower cancer rates, the month of February is designated as National Cancer Prevention Month.
For some people diagnosed with cancer, their cancer could be attributed to preventable causes. Environmental exposure to known and probable carcinogens can be a significant factor. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) even provides a list of substances the agency considers to be potential occupational carcinogens that contains well over 100 substances. The list includes diesel exhaust, wood dust, gasoline, formaldehyde, crystalline silica, and many other common exposure hazards for workers.
“Unfortunately, CCR reports that nearly one out of every two Californians born today will develop cancer at some point in their lives,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “CCR also warns that one in four people with cancer will likely die from it. The good news is effective treatments can make a huge difference, as can preventing exposure to environmental carcinogens in the first place. This includes from our homes, schools, businesses, and even from the great outdoors. For example, exposure to tobacco smoke, radon, and asbestos have all been linked to various forms of cancer.”
To help in this effort, LA Testing supports National Cancer Prevention Month by offering environmental, material, and industrial hygiene testing services. With multiple California laboratories, they also supply air monitoring instruments, easy-to-use test kits, and personal protective equipment. These resources can be used to detect and mitigate exposure to carcinogens and other hazardous substances.
Several years ago, LA Testing sponsored an educational video about National Cancer Prevention Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/d3twvxX1j4o
