Huntington Beach, California, February 4, 2025
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) recently published its annual National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. It covers 2023 data, and sadly, there were 5,283 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States that year. The good news is that is a 3.7 percent decrease from the 5,486 in 2022.
Key findings from the 2023 National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries include:
- A worker died every 99 minutes from a work-related injury in 2023 compared to every 96 minutes in 2022.
- The fatal work injury rate was 3.5 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, down from 3.7 per 100,000 FTE in 2022.
- In California, there were 439 fatal injuries, down from 504 in 2022.
“BLS also recently published its latest account of employer-reported workplace injuries and illnesses for 2023, it also showed there were a decrease in these,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In that report, private industry employers reported 2.6 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses, down 8.4 percent from 2022.”
Both of these BLS publications reinforce the need for effective industrial hygiene and environmental, health, and safety programs in the workplace. LA Testing proudly supports these programs in California with laboratory testing services for chemical, microbial, and radiological hazards. Their California laboratories also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, monitoring instruments, personal protective equipment, and a wide array of other tools and services.
