Title National Radon Action Month and Resources to Test California Homes and Buildings
Introduction LA Testing offers radon and other indoor environmental quality (IEQ) laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, and monitoring instruments to identify exposure risks in the built environment.

Huntington Beach, California, January 10, 2025

The month of January is recognized as National Radon Action Month. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reports that the cold winter months are the best time to test for this odorless and colorless gas. The agency also warns that radon has been found in every county in the state and recommends that every Californian test their home for it.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is released in rock, soil, and water. It can accumulate to dangerous levels as it moves up through the ground to the indoor air through cracks and other holes in the foundation of a structure. In some situations, radon can also enter through well water.

CDPH states that there is no known safe level of exposure to radon since lung cancer can result from low exposures to it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) even claims that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

“The good news is testing for radon in a home or building is a pretty straightforward process,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Knowing the radon level indoors, anywhere that people spend a considerable amount of time, is important because when people breathe in radon, radioactive particles from it can get trapped in the lungs. National Radon Action Month is the perfect time for the public and property managers in California to look into radon testing, mitigation, and advances in radon-resistant construction practices.”

In California, residents can turn to the radon experts at LA Testing for answers. Their laboratories have been providing radon testing services and easy-to-use test kits for years. LA Testing even sponsored an educational video about National Radon Action Month several years ago that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/SAOP0zz6yjo
