Huntington Beach, California, November 6, 2024
The American Lung Association reports that over 1.4 million adults in California have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). They also share that COPD annually results in millions of lost workdays, billions of dollars in treatment costs, and tragically, far too many hospitalizations and deaths.
COPD refers to a group of diseases, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. Common symptoms of the disease that people often mistake as normal signs of aging include wheezing, shortness of breath, ongoing cough, chest tightness, or a combination of all. While cigarette smoke is a leading cause of COPD, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that exposure to air pollutants in the home and workplace, genetic factors, and respiratory infections also play a role.
“To raise awareness of ways to prevent and manage the condition, November is recognized as National COPD Awareness Month,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “LA Testing’s California laboratories support National COPD Awareness Month and offer air and dust testing for many of the common indoor environmental quality (IEQ) pollutants, irritants, and allergens that can exacerbate COPD and other respiratory conditions. These include dust mites, pet dander, mold, bacteria, pollen, perfumes, scented products, cleaning chemicals, smoke, dusty conditions, and outdoor pollution. We also offer comprehensive industrial hygiene laboratory testing services to detect a wide range of airborne chemical and microbial exposure risks in the workplace.”
Several years ago, LA Testing sponsored an educational video about National COPD Awareness Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/Sbl4FLOFBmc
