Huntington Beach, California, November 1, 2024
While the rate of new lung cancer cases continues to be lower in California than many other states, lung cancer is still a significant cause of cancer deaths. Cigarette smoking has long been considered the number one cause of lung cancer and California is fortunate to have one of the lowest smoking rates in the country.
Unfortunately, lung cancer can also be caused by breathing secondhand smoke, being exposed to substances such as asbestos or radon at home or work, and having a family history of lung cancer. To raise awareness and educate the public about the many things that can be done to help prevent new cases of lung cancer, November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that lung cancer is still the leading cause of cancer death among men and women in this country,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In addition to tobacco smoke, exposure to radon, asbestos, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethylene oxide, diesel exhaust, and various forms of silica and chromium could increase one’s chances of developing lung cancer and various other respiratory conditions.”
To help identify a wide range of known and suspected carcinogens, LA Testing’s California laboratories offer environmental and industrial hygiene laboratory testing services. They also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment. Several years ago, LA Testing even sponsored an educational video about Lung Cancer Awareness Month that can still be seen at: https://youtu.be/LV7zwQiwaCQ
