Huntington Beach, California, October 16, 2024
Multiple media reports over the last few months have focused attention over issues of elevated levels of lead in some drinking water sources at various schools in Oakland, California. Testing at a number of the schools found lead levels that required taking fixtures offline to replace them or to install filters to remove the lead.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA):
In children, lead can severely harm mental and physical development, slowing down learning, and irreversibly damaging the brain. In adults, lead can cause increased blood pressure, heart disease, decreased kidney function, and cancer.
“Numerous schools across California have discovered they have lead issues from water fixtures due to a state law that requires testing that went into effect several years ago,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “The lead doesn’t typically come from natural drinking water sources. It’s usually a result of leaching that occurs when water passes through older plumbing fixtures, pipes, or solder that contain lead. These same lead issues can also be found in some homes and commercial buildings throughout California and across the country.”
Helping school districts, concerned parents, and residents test for lead from water, air, dust, surface, and soil samples are the environmental specialists at LA Testing. Their California laboratories provide comprehensive lead testing services, sampling supplies, and they offer an easy-to-use Drinking Water Test Kit.
LA Testing has even sponsored an educational video about lead in drinking water that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/2kvtAcpw1MY
