Title Summer Allergies and Indoor Allergens in California Homes and Buildings
Introduction LA Testing provides indoor environmental quality testing services, sampling supplies, test kits and air monitoring instruments to identify and mitigate exposure to allergens, respiratory irritants and asthma triggers.

Huntington Beach, California, July 1, 2024

Millions of Californians suffer from seasonal allergies. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that nationwide, about a quarter of all adults, and almost 19% of children, have a seasonal allergy.

While many people associate allergies with spring, they can be a problem for some people any time of the year, including the summer months. Outdoor culprits, like pollen, are a common cause of summer allergies. Depending on where one lives, they may be exposed to a variety of different pollens. Generally speaking, trees pollinate during spring, but grasses and weeds can cause pollen allergies throughout the summer months.

High levels of airborne mold are another frequent occurrence during the summer months. Outdoors, warm and moist conditions can be conducive for elevated mold spore counts. This can be an issue for people working or enjoying the outdoors. These same spores can also make their way indoors through open doors and windows, and even on people’s clothes and hair. Mold can also be an issue if there has been an indoor moisture issue that has allowed it to grow on building materials, furnishings or personal belongings.

“Indoor allergens, especially for those who suffer from year-round allergies, can be a source of never ending symptoms for anyone unfortunate enough to live, work or go to school where elevated levels of allergens are airborne or have settled on surfaces,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “These often include pollen, mold and dust mites. Other common indoor allergens come from dogs, cats, rodents, birds, cockroaches and latex to name a few additional sources.”

LA Testing, with laboratories across California, offers indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits and air monitoring instruments to identify a wide range of allergens, respiratory irritants and asthma triggers. If elevated levels are detected, steps can then be taken to mitigate or eliminate exposure. LA Testing also recently sponsored an educational video about summer allergies and indoor air quality that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/WLHrIQS_ooA
