Title EPA Announces Over $91 Million in Rebates to California Schools to Protect Students from Diesel Exhaust Exposure
Introduction LA Testing provides laboratory services, sampling supplies and air monitoring instrumentation to identify diesel exhaust, combustion gases, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds and other pollutants.

Huntington Beach, California, June 18, 2024

Late last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the recipients of their 2023 Clean School Bus Program rebate competition. For California, the rebates total $91,230,000 and will help selectees purchase 380 clean school buses in 47 school districts across the state.

According to the EPA announcement:

This program is a crucial step in California’s journey towards improving children’s health and tackling harmful air pollution, replacing older, diesel-fueled school buses linked to student and community health issues.

The Clean School Bus Program is meant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money for school districts and produce cleaner air. EPA warns that diesel air pollution is linked to asthma and other conditions that harm students’ health and cause them to miss school. The agency claims that phasing out diesel engines will ensure cleaner air for students, bus drivers and school staff working near the bus loading areas, and for the communities these buses drive through.

“All the way back in 1990, diesel engine exhaust was added to California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s (OEHHA) list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity for purposes of Proposition 65,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Breathing elevated levels of it is a health issue and it’s not just students and school faculty who are impacted by exposure. Workers in many industries, as well as anyone living in neighborhoods close to busy roads, freeways, ports, construction sites, truck yards and other facilities with diesel engines, are at possible risk.”

LA Testing’s California laboratories help to protect the public from diesel exhaust exposure through comprehensive air testing analyses and air monitoring instruments to detect particulate matter, combustion gases and other airborne pollutants. LA Testing has even sponsored an educational video about diesel exhaust, particulate matter and air quality issues that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/mAjDvBwKFWE
