Title Global Asbestos Awareness Week and Resources to Protect Workers and the Public in California
Introduction LA Testing provides asbestos testing services, sampling supplies, test kits, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment to identify and mitigate exposure hazards to asbestos fibers and other airborne risks.

Huntington Beach, California, March 29, 2024

April 1st through the 7th is recognized as Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW) in California and across the world. This year marks the 20th GAAW, an annual event which was started by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization to increase awareness about the dangers associated with asbestos and educate people about ways to mitigate their exposure risks.

Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was used in numerous building materials and products for decades. The National Cancer Institute warns that people may be exposed to asbestos in their workplace, their communities or their homes. Exposure over time is known to cause asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer and various other forms of cancer.

“In California, asbestos was identified as a Toxic Air Contaminant back in 1986 by the Air Resources Board,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “It is also classified as a known human carcinogen by state, federal and international agencies. Unfortunately, asbestos can still be found in homes and buildings throughout the state. If asbestos-containing materials have become friable with age, or if these materials are disturbed during renovation, remodeling or demolition activities, fibers could be released into the air. California also has naturally-occurring deposits of asbestos in many parts of the state, allowing for numerous potential pathways for airborne exposure.”

In California, LA Testing offers laboratory services to identify asbestos and many other regulated substances from environmental, industrial hygiene and material samples. Their laboratories also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and a comprehensive range of personal protective equipment.

Several years ago, LA Testing sponsored an educational video about Global Asbestos Awareness Week that can still be seen at:
