Title Tustin to Proceed with Testing for Lead and Asbestos Following California Hangar Fire
Introduction LA Testing offers environmental, industrial hygiene and material testing services, sampling supplies, test kits and personal protective equipment (PPE) to identify and mitigate exposure risks to a wide range of hazardous and regulated substances.

Huntington Beach, CA, February 8, 2024

Following the November fire of a large wooden hangar at the Marine Corps Air Station, the City of Tustin recently announced it would proceed with exterior soil and interior air and dust sampling for asbestos and lead. City officials made the announcement in late December and reported that more information would be shared with residents.

When the fire first occurred, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) warned residents that it had collected and analyzed air and ash samples following the fire that indicated the presence of asbestos, lead, arsenic and nickel. Potential exposure hazards were concerning enough that all schools in the Tustin Unified School District were temporarily closed, as were preschools, daycare centers and multiple parks.

“The Mayor of Tustin stated that the City is moving forward with testing for lead and asbestos to address lingering community concerns,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “This case is a reminder that following a building or structure fire that contains asbestos, lead or other dangerous materials, people need to be aware of the potential hazards that may be left behind that can be spread over a considerable distance.”

Health and emergency officials, as well as the public, can turn to the material, environmental and industrial hygiene experts at LA Testing for laboratory testing services. Their California laboratories offer asbestos, lead, smoke residue, odor, particulate matter, chemical and even microbial testing services. They also provide sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, PPE and other resources to help assess exposure risks following fire damage.
