Last month, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) encouraged Californians to minimize the risk of indoor air pollution during the winter season when people tend spend more time indoors.
According to Cal OES:
Californians may be familiar with days of poor or dangerous outdoor air quality that happen during wildfire season. But did you know that, especially during winter months, you should take steps to promote good indoor air quality too?
Indoor air quality (IAQ) tips provide by the agency include:
- Check the batteries on smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms and make sure they are in working condition.
- Never use a generator inside. Fumes from a generator can be harmful for people and pets. Generators should be kept 20 feet away from a home, downwind from open doors, windows and vents.
- When weather allows, open windows and doors to allow air-flow. Allowing fresh air in will help ventilate a home and give pollutants a chance to air out.
- Check air filters regularly. Make sure the filters are clean and the correct size for the unit they are used in. Replace them as needed so air-flow is not restricted.
- Before using a fireplace, make sure to inspect the chimney and flue. If used improperly, hazardous air may be brought into a home instead of out.
“The quality of the air we breathe indoors has a direct impact on our health and well-being,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, our California laboratories are dedicated to providing the resources to test and monitor IAQ conditions. We provide testing for combustion gases, radon, particulate matter, chemicals, microbial contaminants and other airborne pollutants. LA Testing also offers sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits and air monitoring instruments.”
