Huntington Beach, CA, September 11, 2023
Since 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has designated September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). The month-long observance is designed to educate and encourage people in California and across the nation to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, institutions and communities.
Preparing for a disaster includes being ready for a wide range of possible events. These may include natural hazards such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and earthquakes. They could also include hazards such as pandemics, human-caused events like accidents and acts of violence, and even technology-related hazards.
“Being prepared to manage a wide range of challenges is crucial for businesses and institutions,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “According to Ready.gov, up to 40% of businesses affected by a natural or human-caused disaster do not reopen. In California, LA Testing has been a key partner for those preparing for disaster challenges, and those responding to these types of events. With laboratories throughout the state, LA Testing provides environmental, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, infection control and material testing services. We analyze samples for everything from viruses, bacteria, fungi, chemicals and radiological hazards, to lead, asbestos and a diverse range of other substances.”
LA Testing also carries sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools and personal protective equipment. These resources help to protect workers and the public, and can be instrumental in keeping businesses and institutions operational during challenging times.
