Huntington Beach, California, August 25, 2023
Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $5,732,000 in grant funding to protect children from lead in drinking water at schools and childcare facilities in California. The funds can be used for testing, compliance monitoring and lead in drinking water remediation projects.
The agency reports that this is the first time that activities that remove sources of lead in drinking water are eligible to receive funding through the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act (WIIN). Lead remediation actions may include the removal, installation and replacement of internal plumbing, lead pipes or lead connectors, faucets, water fountains, water filler stations, point-of-use devices and other lead-free apparatus related to drinking water.
“It’s important to note that lead is rarely found in source water, it typically enters tap water through corrosion of plumbing materials,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Schools, homes and other buildings constructed before 1986 are more likely to have lead pipes, fixtures and solder. One of the most common problems is brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures which can leach significant amounts of lead into the water, especially hot water. The amount of lead that may be found in drinking water also depends on the types and amounts of minerals in the water, how long the water stays in the pipes, the amount of wear in the pipes and the water’s acidity.”
Even low levels of lead have been shown to affect IQ, a child’s ability to pay attention and academic achievement. To help identify lead in schools, childcare facilities, homes and work environments throughout California, LA Testing provides environmental testing services, sampling supplies and an easy-to-use Drinking Water Test Kit. They have even sponsored an educational video about lead in drinking water that can be seen at:
