Last month, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla and other politicians from California were in Southeast Los Angeles County to meet with residents impacted by lead contamination from a former battery recycling facility. The business was operation in Vernon for years before it closed its doors. The politicians are pushing for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to designate the impacted neighborhoods as a Superfund site.
According to a news release from the Office of Senator Padilla, he stated the following:
For decades, Exide dumped lead and hazardous contaminants into these communities without consequence, and it’s clear to me that this community of neighbors, friends, and families has been neglected by just about everyone involved. There’s been misstep after misstep and it’s time to finally put an end to that and provide justice. I’m calling on the EPA to formally designate these impacted neighborhoods as a federal Superfund site to provide critical federal resources and expertise to make sure Southeast Los Angeles can count on a thorough clean up that prioritizes the health and safety of everyone who lives here.
“Several years ago, the L.A. County Department of Public Health (DPH) warned that the soil in parts of the communities of Commerce, Bell, Maywood, Huntington Park, Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles and Vernon was contaminated with high levels of lead,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “While some areas have witnessed the removal of contaminated soil, there are still concerns in many neighborhoods. At LA Testing, our local laboratories are available to help residents. We offer laboratory testing services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to identify lead and other heavy metal exposure hazards from a wide array of indoor and outdoor samples.”
