Huntington Beach, California, July 25, 2023
In June, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a settlement with a renovation company over claims of violations of the Toxic Substances Control Act. The company provides renovation services using local contractors at residential properties in California and other states.
A renovation, repair, or painting project in a pre-1978 home or building can easily create dangerous lead dust. Renovation companies that deal with lead-based paint activities must comply with the Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule. This federal law requires that a general contractor or subcontractor have at least one person assigned to a project who has been properly trained in the management of lead-based paint so that they can properly train others and ensure that paint is properly managed or disposed of.
“According to the EPA, the claims in this case apply to six properties in California and involve eight separate violations,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Penalties involving lead-based paints can be costly, the settlement between the EPA and the renovation company in this instance was over $100,000.”
Fortunately, identifying lead hazards in homes and buildings is quick, convenient, and affordable. LA Testing, with laboratories across California, provides environmental, industrial hygiene and material testing services for lead, asbestos, and other regulated materials. They also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, and personal protective equipment. These resources help to protect workers, the public and help companies comply with federal, state, and local health and safety regulations.
