Last month, multiple media outlets published stories about Tori Spelling’s claim that a Los Angeles area home her family had been renting made her and her children sick. According to the actress, the family suffered from skin rashes, extreme fatigue, dizziness, fevers and respiratory infections. It was also reported that “extreme mold” was discovered in the home by a mold inspection company.
Mold is a known allergen, irritant and asthma trigger for many people. Some types of mold also produce toxic substances known as mycotoxins. There are even species of mold associated with water damaged buildings that can cause opportunistic infections in people with a weakened or suppressed immune system.
“The key to preventing indoor mold growth is to control humidity and to quickly deal with any moisture that enters a property through faulty plumbing, building envelop leaks or flooding events,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Otherwise mold can begin to grow in as short as 48 hours and a small issue can quickly turn into a major problem, exposing building occupants to unhealthy conditions.”
Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) testing can be instrumental for locating mold and other exposure risks, especially if it is growing in areas that are out of sight. Testing is also crucial for assessing an indoor environment after cleanup and remediation of any mold and moisture has been completed to ensure the problem has been taken care of.
Dedicated to helping property owners, landlords and tenants identify water damage, mold and a wide range of IEQ concerns are the laboratory testing experts at LA Testing. Their California laboratories provide testing services, sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools and air monitoring instruments.
