Huntington Beach, California, May 26, 2023
Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced $391,500,000 to California for drinking water infrastructure upgrades through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). These funds will be used to help ensure safe drinking water for communities across California, including for the identification and removal of lead pipes, and protecting residents from PFAS pollution.
Identifying and removing lead service lines and pipes is an important goal as lead is a toxic heavy metal. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reports: Lead can get into drinking water when a lead service line corrodes, is removed, or is replaced. Lead exposure can harm children's brains, lower IQs, and affect learning and behavior. Children younger than six years old are at higher risk because their bodies are growing rapidly.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are man-made chemicals that have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years because many of the chemicals in this group do not readily break down in the environment and can build up in animals, including humans. There is evidence that exposure to some of these may cause a variety of health concerns. Back in February, EPA also announced the availability of more than $169 million for California to address emerging contaminants, including PFAS in drinking water.
“Lead and PFAS are just two of the many water contaminants that could pose a health concern for communities in California,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “To help ensure the quality of drinking water across the state, LA Testing’s network of laboratories provide testing services, sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits to identify a wide range of chemical and microbial contaminants from water samples.”
