Title Imported Sauces Recalled by a California Company Due to Undeclared Soy
Introduction LA Testing provides food allergen testing and labeling services to protect consumers and to help companies comply with food regulations to avoid costly product recalls.

Huntington Beach, California, April 17, 2023

Last month, a company in Los Angeles County that specializes in Japanese food and beverages announced the recall of imported Worcester, Chuno and Tonkatsu sauces. The products were distributed in AZ, CA, HI, LV, MD, NY, TX and Washington D.C. and went to restaurants and some retail stores according to information posted by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The sauces were recalled after it was discovered that they contained soy, but were distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence of soy. The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to food and include milk, eggs, wheat, crustacean shellfish, fish, tree nuts, peanuts and soybeans. Sesame became the ninth major food allergen to require special labeling through the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act, a federal law passed in 2021 that went into effect on January 1st of 2023.

According to the recall notice:

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy allergen run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

“Food importers, manufacturers and distributors can turn to the food scientists at LA Testing to help comply with FALCPA and FASTER requirements,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Our California laboratories offer a wide range of food testing and labeling services. These include testing for allergens, microbial and chemical contaminants, food labeling services, shelf life studies and so much more. These services can be essential for protecting the public and preventing costly product recalls.”
