Huntington Beach, California, April 4, 2023
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about the voluntary recall of a popular brand of stainless steel bottles by a company based in California. The refillable bottles, with an upper compartment to hold liquids and a bottom section that can be used to hold everything from snacks to small personal items, are being recalled because they may contain an area of exposed lead located in the bottom storage compartment.
According to the recall notice:
People with high blood levels of lead may show no symptoms, but the condition may cause damage to the nervous system and internal organs. Acute lead poisoning may cause a wide range of symptoms, including abdominal pain, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and bloody or decreased urinary output. Children are particularly vulnerable to lead poisoning. If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time (e.g., weeks to months) permanent damage to the central nervous system can occur. This can result in learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health problems.
The recalled bottles were distributed nationwide via the company’s website, another major online retailer, promotional distributors and in retail stores. Consumers have been advised to not use the product’s storage compartment until a repair kit has been installed.
“In this instance, the manufacturer was made aware of the issue by other entities which prompted the company to have their product tested,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, our laboratories in California offer manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, regulatory agencies and health advocates testing services for lead and other regulated substances, such as phthalates. These material and product testing services protect consumers and can also be essential for helping companies comply with health and safety regulations to avoid costly product recalls.”
