Huntington Beach, California, March 31, 2023
Yet another atmospheric river has inundated large parts of California that had already been repeatedly saturated this winter. Millions of Californians were under flood alerts this month as the 11th atmospheric river dumped a record amount of rain and mountain snow in areas of the Golden State.
Once again, countless property owners, landlords, facility managers, and tenants have had to deal with homes, businesses, and schools damaged by floodwaters. As the process of cleaning up these properties and filing insurance claims gets underway, residents need to be aware of the potential presence of microbial and chemical contaminants that may now be in their properties since floodwaters often contain sewage and chemical pollutants.
“These same soaked properties can also quickly turn into a breeding ground for mold,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “Mold will grow almost anywhere in a building that remains wet or damp for even a relatively short time. This can result in additional property damage, indoor air quality problems and potential health concerns for anyone in the home or building. As cleanup and repair activities begin, people also need to be on the lookout for asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paints that could cause serious exposure risks.”
With multiple laboratories in California, LA Testing is available to provide the laboratory services and sampling supplies needed to identify these hazards to mitigate exposure risks. LA Testing also offers easy-to-use test kits, building inspection tools, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment (PPE).
