Huntington Beach, CA, October 25, 2022
For 2022, National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW) takes place from October 23rd through the 29th. The week of recognition was created through a partnership between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Lead poisoning continues to be a serious health threat in the United States. In fact, HUD reports that some 3.6 million households have children under 6 years of age who live in homes with lead exposure hazards. The agency also shares that even relatively low levels of lead exposure can impair a child’s cognitive development. Children with blood lead levels can experience delayed growth and development, damage to the brain and nervous system, learning and behavior problems, and a host of other health-related problems.
“This toxic metal can harm the brain and other vital organs if inhaled or consumed,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “While everyone is susceptible to lead poisoning, children are particularly vulnerable. There is no safe blood lead level in children. The primary exposure risk for most children comes from lead-based paints that were used in many homes, apartments and other buildings throughout California up until 1978. Another significant exposure route for some children comes from elevated levels of lead in the water they drink.”
Fortunately, lead poisoning is entirely preventable if action is taken to eliminate exposure risks. Helping in this effort are the scientists at LA Testing. Their laboratories in California offer environmental, material and industrial hygiene testing for lead and other hazardous materials from air, water, paint, dust, soil and other types of samples. LA Testing also provides sampling supplies and easy-to-use test kits for lead and many other common exposure risks.
