A Lasting Legacy is the theme for this year’s National Preparedness Month (NPM). The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has designated September as NPM since 2004. The annual event encourages people to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, institutions and communities.
For businesses and institutions, NPM is an important reminder to have contingency plans in place to be able to quickly respond to a natural or man-made emergency/disaster. These can include a wide range of possible events, such as floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and earthquakes. Other emergencies could include illnesses like COVID or the flu; human-caused hazards like accidents and acts of violence; and even technology-related hazards such as power outages and equipment failures. Being prepared is crucial since according to information posted by Ready.gov several years ago, up to 40% of businesses affected by a natural or human-caused disaster do not reopen.
“National Preparedness Month is a time for companies and organizations to put emergency plans on paper if they haven’t already, or to review their emergency plans to make sure they are complete,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In California, LA Testing has been a key partner for those facing these types of events. With laboratories throughout the state, LA Testing provides environmental, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality and infection control testing services for viruses, bacteria, fungi, chemicals and radiological hazards. We also carry sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments, building inspection tools and personal protective equipment. These resources help to protect workers and the public, and can be instrumental in keeping businesses and institutions operational during challenging events.”
