Huntington Beach, CA, September 21, 2022
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about the voluntary recall of 53 nutritional and beverage products by a company based in California. The recall was initiated due to the potential for microbial contamination, including from Cronobacter sakazakii. The products were packaged under a number of different brands and were distributed nationwide.
According to the recall notice:
The list of recalled products does not include products intended for infants (i.e. under the age of one). While infection related to Cronobacter sakazakii is rare, the common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. However, vulnerable and immunocompromised populations may be more susceptible to infection.
The public is advised to not consume the recalled products and to dispose of them immediately or to return them to the place of purchase for a refund. The “best buy date” on the various products range from later this year through late next year.
“At the time of the recall posting, the manufacturer had fortunately not had any reports of illnesses related to the products,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “At LA Testing, our food and beverage scientists are dedicated to helping manufacturers, distributors, retailers and importers prevent these types of product recalls. Potentially contaminated products are a risk to consumers and these types of recalls can be quite costly for companies, even if there are no illnesses.”
With multiple laboratories in California, LA Testing provides microbial and chemical testing for a broad spectrum of contaminants, including opportunistic pathogens. Their product testing specialists also provide services such as shelf life testing, contamination source tracking, and sterility and sanitation validation.
